…..We three came to the city where, despite much busyness, there was little useful work; despite much art and entertainment, little joy; despite many physical comforts, almost no sexual happiness; where among thousands of thousands there was almost not one person exercising most of his human powers, but every one pursued with earnest concentration some object not really to his advantage and which, perhaps fortunately for himself and us, he could not achieve. Yet such as it was! so I remembered my city from early childhood and I shared its ways; and Lord! I was glad to come back to it, as each time I come back.
